WindScanner Technical specifications

Technical description of the proposed new mobile facility:

The proposed new wind and turbulence measurement facility will be able to measure the detailed wind and turbulence fields in at three important locations simultaneously: 1) upwind , 2) in front, and 3) behind (in the wake) of a wind turbine.

This requires:

  1. One 3-D WindScanner, measuring wind and turbulence 2-D plane (100m-150 m Ø) in front ( upwind) of a wind turbine.
  2. A second 3-D WindScanner, measuring wind and turbulence 2-D plane (100m-150 m Ø) right in front (in the face of) a given wind turbine.
  3. A third 3-D WindScanner, measuring wind and turbulence in 2-D planes (100m-150 m Ø) in the wake of (down wind) of a given test wind turbine.

In addition measurements of the wind and turbulence profiles up to ~300 meters above the test site up to ~300 m aloft will be acquired to capture the free boundary layer wind and free-stream turbulence profiles.

Also extensive aerosol and temperature profiles will be measured via RS techniques to fully document the external conditions in the entire the boundary layer during measurements.

It is envisioned to establish the research facility around additional :

  1. Three new 3-dimensional WindScanners (CW-type, w/500 Hz measurement/s, and max height range ~150 m).
  2. At least one 3-dimensional WindScanner (pulsed –type, w/ 5Hz meas-urement rate/s, and max height range ~300 m or higher.
  3. The RS facility will in addition contain several other RS instrumentation, such as sensitive aerosol profilers, ceilometers, and temperature profilers.

The RS equipment will be property of and stationed permanently at Risø DTU and operated in conjunction with the already established operation of the Test station for large wind turbine’s , Høvsøre ,Western Jutland. Form this base, it will then be deployed to measurement campaigns elsewhere via the facilities new established mobile measurement team.
